Hypertension And Obesity
Understanding the Relation between Hypertension and Obesity.
The problem of obesity is sharply increasing at an alarming rate. As estimated by different health journals, over 65% of adults are suffering from overweight problem, and of them over 31% is experiencing obesity in their lifetime. Both of these groups are at high risk for developing various life-threatening health complications including hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, eye impairment and many others. In this article, we will critically analyze about the possible relation between hypertension and obesity. In addition, let us look onto few useful self-measure to keep ourselves healthy and fit. The Trend and Prevalence As expounded in the trend studies, the problem of obesity is on continuous rise for last two decades. So is true with the problem of hypertension. In fact, a strong correlation between hypertension and obesity has been observed in recent years. In the United States, over 29% individuals are suffering from hypertensive problem. These individuals are commonly reported as having high blood pressure, say 140/90mmHg, or extensively dependent on hypertensive

Vitamin D May Boost Teens' Arterial Health (CME/CE) (MedPage Today) -- Vitamin D supplements reduce the arterial stiffness associated with pervasive vitamin D deficiency among black teens, even in sunny climes, researchers found. Risk of MI May Go Up With Calcium Supplements (CME/CE, with video) (MedPage Today) -- Calcium supplementation appears to increase the risk of myocardial infarction, a meta-analysis showed. Sleep Disorder May Signal Neuro Conditions to Come (CME/CE, with video) (MedPage Today) -- REM sleep behavior disorder -- in which dreams are accompanied by excessive movement -- may be a sign of neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's disease that manifest several decades later, a case series showed. More Support for Compression-Only CPR (CME/CE, with video) (MedPage Today) -- CPR with chest compression alone led to outcomes comparable to those achieved with chest compression plus rescue breathing, with a slight edge for compression alone, data from two large clinical trials showed. Federal Panel Endorses Ticagrelor for ACS ADELPHI, Md. (MedPage Today) -- An FDA advisory panel has voted overwhelmingly to recommend approval of AstraZeneca's investigational antiplatelet drug ticagrelor (Brilinta), saying it appears more effective than clopidogrel (Plavix) for patients with acute coronary syndrome who will be treated either medically or with PCI. Soft Endpoint Sought for Pediatric PAH Trial (MedPage Today) -- An FDA advisory panel will revisit an increasingly familiar battleground this week, as it considers whether a drug sponsor can substitute a surrogate endpoint for a clinical outcome in a pediatric pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) trial. Hospital Expansion Not Key to PCI Access in STEMI (CME/CE, with audio) (MedPage Today) -- Sending heart attack patients directly to hospitals that can do primary percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) may be better than trying to expand PCI capabilities to more hospitals, according to an analysis of computer simulations. Delirium Predicts Poor Health Outcomes in Elderly (CME/CE) (MedPage Today) -- Older patients who show delirium are at increased risk for a range of negative outcomes, independent of other major risk factors, said researchers conducting a meta-analysis. FDA Panel to Vote on Blood Thinner Ticagrelor WASHINGTON (MedPage Today) -- FDA reviewers said AstraZeneca's investigational antiplatelet ticagrelor (Brilinta) appears more effective than clopidogrel (Plavix) for patients with acute coronary syndrome, but expressed concern that the findings didn't hold up in a U.S. population. Drugmaker Fights Approval of Generic Anticoagulant (MedPage Today) -- Sanofi-aventis filed a lawsuit yesterday seeking to block sales of a generic version of its low-molecular-weight heparin product Lovenox (enoxaparin sodium injection) following the FDA's approval of the generic last week. Tx for Blocked Carotid Varies by Region (CME/CE) (MedPage Today) -- The treatment of blocked carotid arteries varies across the country, with patients in some areas of the U.S. more likely to undergo endarterectomy while others were more likely to receive stents, researchers said. Racial Differences in CABG Socioeconomic, Too (CME/CE, with audio) (MedPage Today) -- Older African Americans living in "socially disadvantaged" areas were less likely than whites to receive coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) in top-ranked hospitals, and often received treatment in lower-ranked facilities further from their homes, researchers said. Wider Stroke Treatment Window Works in Real World (CME/CE) (MedPage Today) -- An expansion of the window for stroke treatment with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to 4.5 hours after onset was quickly implemented into clinical practice following the release of positive study results, researchers found. FDA Okays New Hypertension Polypill WASHINGTON (MedPage Today) -- The FDA has approved a combination of three hypertension drugs -- olmesartan medoxomil, amlodipine, and hydrochlorothiazide (Tribenzor) -- to treat patients whose blood pressure is not controlled on angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers, or diuretics. CABG Cost May be Related to Procedure Volume (CME/CE) (MedPage Today) -- Steering clear of low-volume hospitals and physicians may be one way to lower the costs of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery, researchers found.
medications. Different studies have confirmed that the relation between hypertension and obesity is linear. A Critical Appraisal However, the strength and weakness of the relation between hypertension and obesity needs to be critically evaluated. In different ethnic and racial groups, this relation is not as strong as it is with some other cultural groups. Hence, risk estimation suggests that while a majority of obese condition may contribute to the development of hypertension, there might be some other reasons as well to develop such complications. An in-depth study suggests that 'beer gut' or accumulation of fat in the abdominal area can make an individual more vulnerable towards hypertension compared to overall obesity problem. Hence, considering the above fact, we can conclude the accumulation of fat in the abdominal area is more responsible for causing hypertension. So, there is a strong correlation between abdominal fat and hypertension, but not directly to the overall obesity only. Potential Self Measures Still much more studies are needed to confirm whether a scientifically acclaimed strong correlation between hypertension and overall obesity exists or not, but overweight and obesity have strong and proven adverse effect on overall health system. So, excessive weight gain is always discouraged. By taking few simple measures, you can easily stay in a good shape, such as following a healthy lifestyle and healthy diet, doing regular exercise, avoiding sedentary behavior, taking admission into weight loss program if needed, controlling alcohol consumption and quit smoking.
